Our Approach

What is
The Third Space?

Our Ethos

The Third Space Approach is a relational framework that challenges the false binaries shaping how we respond to behavior — binaries like good versus bad, control versus chaos, punishment versus permissiveness. These frameworks are not neutral; they are rooted in colonialist and patriarchal systems that prioritize domination, hierarchy, and compliance over relationship, context, and care.

The Third Space offers an alternative paradigm. It names and centers the relational space where these binaries dissolve — where feelings can be honored without domination, boundaries can exist without punishment, and accountability can be held without shame. This approach draws from decolonizing, liberatory, and relational traditions that recognize behavior as meaningful, contextual, and shaped by systems of power as well as by lived experience.

Working With Youth and Adults

Because these systems shape how adults are treated just as much as how young people are treated, the Third Space Approach applies to both. With youth, it moves away from behavior management models that rely on control and moral judgment, and toward relational approaches that understand behavior as communication and regulation as something learned in connection with others. With adults — educators, caregivers, and leaders — it challenges the binary between professionalism and humanity, offering support that builds capacity, reflection, and sustainability rather than shame or burnout.

The People Behind the Practice

ISAIAH JACKSON-RAMIREZ, MA
FOUNDER

My work sits at the intersection of social-emotional learning and social justice. Because humans are social beings, dignity, safety, and belonging are essential to wellbeing and our ability to succeed. Systemic oppression restricts access to these foundations, leaving many people to navigate systems that depend on policy alone rather than relationship. My work focuses on expanding access to these conditions to advance equity for both young people and the adults who serve them.

For over fifteen years, I’ve partnered with schools, nonprofits, and youth-serving organizations to design curricula, professional learning, and implementation supports that are trauma-informed, culturally affirming, and responsive to real-world constraints. My background spans youth and young-adult mental health, early childhood through high school education, adult learning, and organizational systems, with particular attention to how power, identity, and context shape student experience.

At The Third Space, I partner with schools and youth-serving organizations to:

  • Lead professional learning that strengthens regulation, reflection, and relational practice

  • Facilitate student-centered SEL experiences that model trauma-aware, identity-affirming approaches

  • Support implementation through coaching, modeling, and reflective consultation

  • Align teams around shared language and practices that move beyond compliance-driven systems

  • Strengthen organizational cultures that expand dignity, safety, and belonging for both youth and adults
